June 12 Northern Virginia Primary Primer
With no state offices and few local elections in Northern Virginia in 2018, much of the focus will be on the mid-term Congressional elections. However, Alexandria will elect its next mayor and its six city councilmembers this year, and the Democratic primary is right around the corner on June 12.
In the Democratic primary for Mayor of Alexandria, NV/RPAC has endorsed Vice-Mayor Justin Wilson.
Each year the NV/RPAC Trustees, a select group of dedicated REALTORS®, evaluate candidates for office based solely on their positions on real estate related issues. This endorsement was made because of Wilson’s proven leadership on city council and his support for housing, transportation and other issues that affect buyers and sellers of real property in Alexandria.
Of note, Wilson has led the fight for various transportation solutions in Alexandria, including the approval of the Potomac Yard Metro station and the West End Transitway. He has supported funding for affordable housing and the expansion of public-private partnerships to provide new committed affordable housing. Wilson fought for funding to address school enrollment growth and he has worked to reduce regulatory burdens for small businesses.
In addition to the Mayoral race, the primary also includes twelve individuals seeking the Democratic nomination for six city council seats.
In this crowded field, NV/RPAC has endorsed the following candidates based on their previous positions on real estate related issues and their willingness to work with NVAR on REALTOR® priorities:
Councilman Will Bailey
Councilman John Taylor Chapman
Councilwoman Del Pepper
Councilman Paul Smedberg
