1.    What interests you most about your industry?
After a law enforcement career that spanned over two decades and encompassed more than my share of moves and home purchases I decided to go back to my roots in the building trades and my passion for refurbishing little loved homes and acquired a Pillar To Post Home Inspection franchise.  I really enjoy working with people.  Especially first time home buyers.  They are like sponges.  They want to know everything about their prospective home.  I get the opportunity to educate them.  Not just during the home inspection but often long after.  I get emails, texts, and phone calls all the time on what I advise I have for the next project from previous clients.

2.    What is one piece of advice or something you wish Realtors® knew about your job?
Sometimes I get the sense that many realtors are under the impression that when an older home is “totally” remodeled that it is the same as or close to new construction.  It’s not.  When a home built in the 20’s and 30’s or even the 60’s is remodeled I usually end up spending a lot more time on the inspection.  Because the home has evolved over time there is a lot more investigative work to be done.  A lot more to learn about it.  Heating systems may have gone from coal, to oil, to gas and then electric.  Or electric from knob and tube to cloth wrapped and finally Romex wiring.  There’s always a little of the old left and sometimes connected to the new.

3.    What is one tip you can share about your business that outsiders would never think of?
Home Inspections are not just for buyers.  They are for sellers too.  If someone is even contemplating selling their home an inspection is highly recommended First thing. Even before calling in a real estate professional. It can take weeks or even months to address HVAC, Electrical, or Plumbing issues not to mention the numerous little fixes that will probably have to be addressed.  What good is a beautifully staged home if there is a significant issue identified at the home inspection.  The whole point is not to be surprised.

4.    What was your most impactful professional learning experience?
As a rookie police officer I learned early on and followed the mantra, "Early is On Time”, “On Time is Late” and “Late Is NOT an Option”.  In my own business it is even more important.  Early arrival for every inspection is required.  It not only speeds the process along, so that no one is waiting around me to set up, but conveys a level of professionalism I think is sometimes missing from my industry.  People are making, in most cases, the largest purchase of their lives and rely on me to provide them with information critical to their decision making process.  What does it say to them if I can’t even get there on time.


5.    Any funny/odd stories involving Realtor® clients? (won’t use names of course)
The moral of the story is if you don’t know what it does don’t push it.  During a condo inspection of a particularly old, but newly renovated building, the realtor and I discovered a fairly non-descript red button tucked behind a wardrobe on a bedroom wall.  No wires just a doorbell like button.  She was particularly interested, and I will admit to being curious myself.  Our plan was to complete the inspection and then try to ascertain the buttons purpose.  As I moved to another room a bell began to ring.  It sounded like a school class bell from a bygone era.  Somewhat muffled though.  No bell was obvious.  Then another bell began to ring and another and another.  She had pushed it.  She couldn’t help herself.  She just had to push that button.  As it turns out the building had been an old nursing home. The bells were for calls for service from each room but had been covered up by lowered ceilings and not removed.  The button was the last remaining one in the entire building.  When we left about an hour later the bells were still ringing in each condo unit.  We were not particularly popular with the 20 or so unit residents that day as we made a hasty get away.

6.    You are stranded on an island for 30 days and can bring three items with you, what do you bring?
Total utilitarian that I am.  I would bring a lighter, a pocket knife and a 4’x8’ piece of plastic.  Why the plastic you ask.  It’s a raincoat.  A water tight roof.  A rain water collector and can be folded up to fit in my back pocket where ever I go.
