Professionals: That’s Who We R®

As members of the National Association of Realtors®, all Realtors® abide by the Code of Ethics. The Code of Ethics is a helpful business resource that ensures the success of Realtors® and the future of the real estate industry.

Helping You Do Business

The Realtor® Code of Ethics was adopted by the National Association of Realtors® in 1913, and the Code continues to inspire best practices for all Realtors® today. The Code isn’t just words on a page, but a pledge of honesty, integrity, professionalism, and community service. The Code exists as a helpful resource and guide for working with consumers, the public, and other Realtors®. Above all, the Code enhances the Realtor® brand by setting the standard for ethics and professionalism.

Code of Ethics, Lockbox Rules and NVAR’s Bylaws: What's the Difference?

The Code of Ethics, Bylaws and Lockbox Rules all guide Realtors® in important ways. Whereas the Code of Ethics is about your professional and ethical responsibilities, NVAR’s Bylaws are the rules that govern the operation and management of the association. It covers the fundamental governance issues regarding the objectives of our association, qualifications for membership, membership duties, and other important topics.  Lockbox Rules are rules and regulations for the use of our SentriLock™ lockbox system. These rules provide guidelines for anyone who wishes to receive access to the system.

In addition, while the Code of Ethics establishes objective, enforceable ethical standards governing the professional conduct of Realtors®, Pathways to Professionalism is a list of professional courtesies for use by Realtors® on a voluntary basis and cannot form the basis for a professional standards complaint.

Alternative Dispute Resolution

The NVAR Ombudsman Program provides an alternative resolution service for members of the public or other Realtors® with complaints against members of the association. The program is designed to resolve uncomplicated, communication-based disputes through simple education.  It is an excellent option for parties looking for a quick resolution to an issue they are experiencing.
