Early Voting Now Open: When, Where and How to Vote in the General Election

by Chris Barranco | 09/17/2021

I voted

Early voting begins Friday, September 17 for the November 2 General Election all across the Commonwealth of Virginia. This off-year election ballot includes the high-profile contests for Virginia Governor; Lieutenant Governor; and Attorney General.  All 100 seats of the Virginia House of Delegates are also up for election in 2021 along with local contests around the state.

All registered voters in Virginia are eligible to vote by mail or in person early or on election day. NVAR is providing the information below to help you determine applicable deadlines, times, and locations.

Early in-person Voting:

You may vote early at your local registrar’s office and at specified locations throughout your locality beginning September 17 (45 days before Election Day) and ending the Saturday before Election Day, October 30. Before visiting your local registrar’s office or any remote voting locations, you may wish to check which locations are open for voting and check your registration status. You do not have to have a reason or fill out an application to vote early.

Voting by Mail:

Applications to request a mail-in ballot must be received in the Office of Voter Registration & Elections by 5 p.m., Friday, October 22. Access an application by visiting www.vote.elections.virginia.gov

Completed ballots must be either returned to the local registrar’s office by 7 p.m. on Tuesday, November 2, or postmarked by November 2 and received in the office by noon on Friday, November 5. Applications should not be submitted before voting in person.

Ballot drop boxes will be available in certain locations for those unable to get the ballot returned by mail.  Check with your local registrar for ballot drop box hours and locations.

Voting on Election Day, November 2:

On Election Day Polls Are Open from 6:00 a.m. until 7:00 p.m. To help prevent the spread of COVID-19, local governments may move or enact specific requirements at your usual voting precinct.  Please check with your registrar’s office before proceeding to the polls.

Registering to Vote:

The deadline to register to vote for the November 2 General Election is October 12. Visit www.vote.elections.virginia.gov to register, check registration status, or update an existing registration.
