NEW NVAR Members - Remember to take your Mandatory Orientation Class within the first 60 days. Failure to attend could result in termination of NVAR Membership. Please note that Orientation does NOT fulfill your post-licensing requirements!

The Virginia Real Estate Board has implemented a new requirement for those whose licenses will expire as of July 1, 2012 through June 30, 2014. All real estate licensees will be required to take an additional three-hour Residential Standard Agency Course in order to renew their licenses.

New salesperson initially licensed BEFORE July 1, 2008, must complete the 30 hours of PLE within their first two-year term in order to renew their license.
New salespersons initially licensed ON or AFTER July 1, 2008 must complete the 30 hours of PLE WITHIN ONE YEAR of initial licensure. Agents have a choice of three practice tracks:
- Residential real estate
- Commercial real estate
- Property management
Within each 30-hour curriculum, there are mandatory topics and elective topics. A salesperson must select one of the practice tracks by completing an approved Mandatory Topic within that track.
NVAR offers online and onsite courses in the residential real estate track. Commerical & Property Management courses are currently being offered only through our online training. For details on the commercial and property management tracks, visit the Online Training section of our website.
Residential Real Estate
Mandatory Topics - 15 hours (minimum of 3 hours in each section)
- Agency Law
- Fair Housing
- Real Estate Law
- Offer to Purchase Ethics and Standards of Conduct/Current Industry Issues and Trends
Elective Topics – 15 hours (approved courses are a minimum of 1 hour and a maximum of 21 hours)
Elective topic course hours can be completed from any practice track (residential, commercial or property management). Listed Below are the elective topics for the PLE Residential track.
